Acupuncture Course Overview

We would like to introduce you to our range of CPD, Foundation, Certificate and Diploma courses in Acupuncture/Acupressure.  The courses are designed for practitioners who have existing skills and experience as a therapist and wish to widen their treatment regime. For example, massage therapists, podiatrists, physiotherapists, sports therapists, chiropractors, osteopaths and nurses.

Acupuncture is growing in popularity and importance throughout the world, and is now widely used by healthcare practitioners in the NHS and private practice. With the advancements in research which chiefly addresses some of the underlying mechanism and effects of acupuncture it has allowed this form of treatment to be more accepted in the West

The advantages of acupuncture are that it is simple, convenient and has few contraindications and side effects. Generally speaking, acupuncture treatment is safe if it is performed properly by a well-trained practitioner, therefore our courses have a strong emphasis on health and safety.

We provide Foundation, Certificate, Diploma and CPD courses in Western and Traditional Chinese Acupuncture and Acupressure. These courses are designed to fit in with your busy life style and can be completed in stages. We have also tried to keep our courses competitively priced and offer a range of payment methods.  Students are allowed to progress at their own pace across the range of qualifications from foundation to certificate then onto the diploma, or they may wish to start on the certificate and then progress onto the diploma. There will be some students who only wish to do the foundation course or the certificate and may feel that they do not need to further their training.

Method of study and assessment
Our seminars are divided into practical sessions and lectures, which are presented on a Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  We aim to keep the seminars as practical as possible to allow students to gain as much hands on experience while attending the seminars.

Home-study coursework
A comprehensive and informative home-study section is provided, which supports the topics covered on the seminars.  Assignments and case studies will be given for some of the modules.  Students will be expected to undertake background reading before and after attending seminars and to submit their assignments and case studies after each section of their home study is completed.  The coursework will be marked by tutors at the school and returned with comments, corrections, and constructive advice.  Top

Examination
Examination is by continuous assessment of the home-study coursework, assignments, case studies, short written tests and practical assessments.  A Certificate or a Diploma will be awarded once the examining board is satisfied with a student’s competence.

Graduates of the Certificate and Diploma in Acupuncture courses are recognised by the designatory letters Cert.Ac or Dip.Ac respectively. This indicates that they have completed the course to the required standard and obtained a certificate of competence to practice acupuncture (Cert.Ac/Dip.Ac).  Top

Tutor(s) relevant existing qualifications in the subject/occupational area
Steve Bailey is the principal tutor on the Acupuncture Foundation, Certificate and Diploma Course.  As a chartered physiotherapist and a registered podiatrist he has gained immense understanding and experience in exercise-rehabilitation, functional biomechanics, orthopaedics, physical training, coaching and conditioning, exercise and sports physiology.  He has treated, coached and trained various teams and individual athletes up to national and international standards (including members of the British judo squad, Nottingham Forest Football Club, Coventry City Football Club, and Sheffield United Football).

Mr Bailey has over 9 years experience in the use of acupuncture in the management of musculoskeletal disorders and specialises in the management of sports and musculoskeletal conditions affecting the lower back and lower limb.  Acupuncture forms an integral part of his treatment.  Therefore, over the past 9 years he has continued to advance and develop his knowledge and skills in this field.  He is a registered member of the Acupuncture Practitioner Organisation and the Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapists and has undertaken an MSc in acupuncture at Coventry University.  With a combined knowledge in acupuncture, physiotherapy and podiatry Mr Bailey is well equipped with the necessary skills, knowledge and experience to provide podiatrists and physical therapists with a high standard of training in acupuncture.  Since 1992, he has taught in various schools, colleges and university and provides CPD and postgraduate training courses for podiatrists, physiotherapist, chiropractors, osteopaths and massage therapists.

Other lecturers assisting on the acupuncture courses either hold PhD, MSc, BSc qualifications or a relevant certificate in the area in which they lecture or provide support.  Top

Initial guidance and support
Guidance and support is provided through personal tutors, mentors and information booklets, which direct students to further reading.  These will help to support the information given in the seminars.  Students are recommended to keep regular email contact with their tutors and mentors for assistance with case studies, assignments and treatment protocols.  Assignments and case studies that are marked are returned with comments, corrections and constructive advice.  Top

Course monitoring and review procedures
The course is monitored and reviewed through a questionnaire feedback from the students on each of the seminars, to ensure that they found the course informative and to evaluate whether the workshops aims and objectives were met.  The feedback from the questionnaires and discussions will help us to improve the quality and level at which the course is presented.  Top

Course Accreditation
Acupuncture courses are at present unregulated in the UK.  There are several schools to choose from but every prospective student asks if the acupuncture courses are accredited.
All accreditation at present is done by independent bodies such as:

  • The British Acupuncture Council (BAcC)
  • The Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
  • The British Medical Acupuncture Association(BMAS)
  • The Acupuncture Practitioners Organisation (APO)
  • The Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapist (AACP)

Each of these bodies sets its own standards for acupuncture courses. The Foundation, Certificate and Diploma in acupuncture courses are accredited by The Acupuncture Practitioners Organisation (APO). For more information visit www.acupuncture-p-o.co.uk.  Top
